A 'self' bow (made from one piece of wood) relies on the natural properties of the material for resilience and power. When available in suitable quality, ash, yew, maple, osage and elm are among the woods I use.
Alternatively laminating a strong tensile natural material such as bamboo or hickory onto the back of the bow widens the choice of timbers for the belly of the bow. Sinew and rawhide are also alternatives.
Decoration is a matter of choice and options are many -the most popular is painting the bow using natural pigments.
Self and laminated flatbows are from £250
Painted flatbows from £370
eg Ashmolean 'Powhatan Bow' in American Ash £250
Sinew and rawhide backed bows also available, please contact via link below
